Cordia Abyssinica

Description:

Cordia Abyssinica, also known as "Cordia Africana" is a species of flowering tree that is native to East Africa. It is a small to medium-sized tree with distinctive yellow-orange bark and glossy leaves. The tree is often used for its timber and medicinal properties and is also known to have cultural significance in some African communities.

Key Notes:

  1. Physical Characteristics: The tree grows up to 20 meters tall with a trunk diameter of up to 60 centimeters. Its bark is yellow-orange and has a flaky texture, while the leaves are glossy, elliptical, and up to 20 centimeters long.

  2. Traditional Uses: The bark, leaves, and roots of Cordia abyssinica have been used for medicinal purposes, treating various ailments such as malaria, diarrhea, and skin infections. The wood is also used for furniture and carving.

  3. Ecological Importance: The tree provides a habitat for various bird species, and its leaves serve as food for caterpillars of certain butterfly species. It also plays a role in soil conservation as its roots help prevent soil erosion.

  4. Cultural Significance: In some African communities, Cordia abyssinica is considered a sacred tree and is used in traditional ceremonies and rituals. Its bark is also used to make traditional musical instruments.
